Bridging Two Worlds: Preparing Teachers for Teaching in Diverse Classrooms
The demographics of Canadian classrooms are changing and there is a pressing need to better prepare teachers to meet the diverse needs of newcomer and refugee youth. The experiences of refugees are complex and often punctuated with trauma, violence, loss, and personal stress. These factors can have an impact on the settlement trajectory and the overall sense of belonging that newcomers experience. This presentation draws on findings from a three-year research program that examined best practices for supporting refugee student integration in Canada. Bridging Two Worlds, a curriculum program that evolved from this research, is a teacher development resource that includes over 30 lessons and activities for teachers on topics such as: conflict awareness; social determinants of health; peace and sustainability; refugee characteristics; building personal and community connections; teacher self-care; culturally responsive teaching; trauma-sensitivity/mental health awareness; and, career development. In addition, the resource includes over 50 suggested instructional activities ranging from grades K-12 designed to address the needs of refugee children. Findings related to best-practices for supporting refugee and newcomer youth in Canada will be shared and recommendations for policy and practice will be discussed.
